Some progress

At the top of the scorecard, Nestle leads the way on climate change and water usage, and is most transparent. A failure to condemn land grabs and to support women in its supply chains prevent it from being a true sector leader on policy, though.

How are the scores formed?

We assessed publicly available information on the policies and commitments of the 'Big 10' food companies towards the sourcing of agricultural commodities from developing countries. The Scorecard looks at seven themes, weighing each theme equally. The index tackles some cutting edge issues that will require rigorous debate and dialogue between companies, civil society and industry experts. Find out more...

Land

Score 3

Nestle agrees to negotiate with communities over land, but shows no understanding of how changes in land use affect people and the planet. Unimpressive.

Score 4

Good on the theory, poor on the follow through. Nestle understands the issues faced by women but has done little to ensure women in its supply chains receive genuine support.

Workers

Score 6

Not bad. Nestle recognizes workers’ rights, international labor standards and UN business guidelines. No data on the number of workers in its supply chain, though.

Climate

Score 6

Nestle is aware of climate change but lacking in action. It has no greenhouse gas reduction targets, and doesn’t insist its suppliers help farmers adapt to changing weather.

Transparency

Score 7

Pretty impressive. Nestle reveals where it sources from and how much it sources, and it reports well on sustainably. Shame its supplier data is lacking, though.

Water

Score 7

The best of the Big Ten, Nestle appreciates the value of water, knows how much it uses and supports major water initiatives. Reduction targets would be beneficial, however.
